This study aims to analyze the meaning of marriage constructed by Generation Z in Gorontalo City and to identify the redefinition of marriage as a response to the complexity of Gorontalo marriage customs and the Islamic principle of simplicity. This research employed a qualitative empirical approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, supported by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's social construction theory and the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah perspective. The findings reveal that Generation Z perceives marriage primarily as an act of worship that emphasizes spiritual, emotional, and economic preparedness rather than ceremonial grandeur. The redefinition of marriage is reflected in simplifying customary wedding practices while preserving their philosophical, religious, and social values. The study concludes that Islamic law and Gorontalo customary traditions are complementary, enabling cultural preservation to coexist with the principles of simplicity, public benefit, and sustainable family development in contemporary society.
