Technical and Economic Efficiency Analysis of Local Maize Farming in Sumenep Using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) Approach

Sumenep local maize possesses superior adaptation to dryland, yet its productivity remains lower than hybrid varieties. This study aims to analyze the technical and economic efficiency of local maize farming in Sumenep Regency using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach. Primary data were obtained through a survey of 45 farmers in Manding, Lenteng, and Talango. Input variables included land area, seeds, fertilizer, labor, and pesticides, while the output was total yield (kg/ha). The BCC model under Variable Return to Scale (VRS) assumption was employed to measure relative technical efficiency among farmers. Results showed that the average technical efficiency reached 0.84, while economic efficiency was 0.71. This indicates an opportunity to increase efficiency by 16% through input optimization. Factors most affecting inefficiency were labor allocation and disproportionate fertilizer use. Efficiency improvements can be achieved through adaptive cultivation technology, improved input management, and strengthening farmer institutions. Optimal, precise, and environmentally friendly input use is essential to increase productivity. This study provides a scientific basis for developing strategies to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of local maize based on resource efficiency.
