Abstract

The problem of household organic waste in urban areas is a significant environmental challenge due to the high volume of waste and limited management systems, but at the same time it has the potential to be used productively if managed with the right approach. One alternative for managing organic waste that is applicable at the community level is the use of Local Microorganisms (MOL) as a result of fermenting local organic materials. However, low environmental awareness and limited technical capacity among the community remain major obstacles to the development of this practice.

This community service activity aims to strengthen environmental awareness and improve the technical capacity of the community in producing MOL from household organic waste through a participatory empowerment approach. The program was implemented in the Kadolokatapi Waste Bank Group, Baubau City, involving 20 participants. The implementation methods included needs identification, learning-by-doing MOL production training, appropriate technology application, and continuous mentoring.

The results of the activity showed an increase in community environmental awareness, reflected in a change in perceptions of organic waste and an increase in waste sorting and processing practices at the household level. In addition, around 85% of participants were able to produce MOL independently with an average volume of 2-3 liters per month and good fermentation quality. These findings indicate that the integration of environmental awareness raising, technical training, and continuous mentoring is effective in encouraging behavioral change, strengthening community capacity, and supporting sustainable community-based organic waste management.
